Biosolids land application facilities Pennsylvania

Landis Sewerage Authority
Client: Landis Sewerage Authority
1776 S. Mill Road
Vineland, NJ 08360
Contact: Dennis Palmer, Exec. Director
Project Location: Biosolids Land Application Facility
Deerfield Twp, New Jersey
Project Type: Management and Operations of Agricultural Land Application Facility
Project Description: LRRM has been providing management and operations personnel for this 400 acre facility since its opening in 1989. The facility consists of 400 tillable acres growing corn, small grains and hay. Liquid biosolids are brought to the site in 6,000 tankers and transferred to AgChem Model 2004 or 004 AgGators for injection/application. The site has a New Jersey Pollution Discharge Elimination System (NJPDES) permit, which requires extensive recordkeeping and reporting.
Project Responsibilities: LRRM provides all necessary personnel for biosolids transportation and application, operation of the farm including planting, harvesting and marketing, routine equipment maintenance and personnel and equipment necessary for assuring permit compliance. Site staff includes a full-time Operations Foreman, Farm Supervisor and Mechanic, a part time Site Manager and up to 6 seasonal workers for biosolids transportation, application and farming. Permit compliance requires preparation of weekly reports (to the client) on all site activities, scheduling of biosolids application and planting/harvest activities, preparation of quarterly reports tracking nutrient and metals application, and reporting of other monitoring activities, such as groundwater or soil testing.

LRRM has had 1, 2 and 3 year contracts under a Professional Services arrangement with the Authority. Operating and management costs have been steady over the past few years, and current cost for operation are about $320 per dry ton for a facility handling about 1,000 dry tons per year.

B&B Poultry
Client: B & B Poultry
P.O. Box 307
Norma, New Jersey 08347
Contact: Mark Fisher
(856) 692-8893
Project Location: Various Farm Sites, southern New Jersey
Project Type: Land Application and Transportation of Food Processing Residual
Project Description: B & B Poultry is a slaughter house processing chickens into a variety of products. A biological pretreatment system produces a food processing residual that must be lime stabilized prior to land application. Historically, this material was being transported to southeastern PA for land application.

Since May, 1997 LRRM in conjunction with a local farmer, has been contracted to transport, lime stabilize and land apply this material.

Project Responsibilities: LRRM is providing turn-key management of the residuals for B & B Poultry. This has included obtaining a permits for the farm sites, pumping, hauling and land applying the residual, contracting for necessary laboratory analyses and completing necessary State and Federal reports on the biosolids land application.

Residuals are removed several times each week for land application, and will be managed year-round by either land application or through storage during winter months.

Confidential NJ Food Processor
Client: Confidential Food Processor
Project Location: Central New Jersey
Project Type: Regulatory Compliance and Agricultural Land Application of Food Processing Residuals
Project Description: LRRM provides management, transportation and application services to transport approximately 5,000,000 gallons per year of liquid food processing residuals from the point of generation to a number of farms in the central New Jersey area. The material provides the necessary nutrients for growing hay , corn and small grains by the farmer. The implementation of this land application project allowed the client to cease the operation of a large dewatering operation and reduced total disposal costs by approximately $500,000/year.
Project Responsibilities: LRRM provides the transportation and land application services to this client on a turnkey basis. LRRM is responsible for all regulatory compliance, application monitoring, permitting, agronomic consulting for farmers and management for the beneficial reuse of the residuals from the treatment of wastewater from the facility.

Confidential Food Processor, SC
Client: Confidential Client
Project Location: Northern S.C.
Project Type: Beneficial Reuse Feasibility Assessment, Engineering, Regulatory Compliance and Oversight of Agricultural Land Application
Project Description: This food processing facility located in South Carolina generates significant amounts of residuals from the physical/chemical treatment of wastewater from the production operations. Daily flows of wastewater approach 1,000,000 gpd with very high loading of solids and greases. Previous attempts to land apply or recycle the material were unsuccessful, resulting in poor crop response, increased expense (capital and operating) and generally failed program.
Project Responsibilities: LRRM was retained to investigate the alternatives for the handling of the residuals generated to allow the client to move away from directing this material to a landfill. LRRM investigated a number of alternatives including:

  • Combination with chicken litter
  • Composting
  • Incineration/drying
  • Direct land application
  • Land application of liquids & solids

The result is a current pending permit with the State for a trial composting program from which a combination of liquid land application and composting is anticipated.

Confidential Pennsylvania Meat Packer
Client: Confidential Client
Project Location: NE Pennsylvania
Project Type: Marketing and Land Application of Pelletized Food Processing Residual
Project Description: A large meat packing facility generates a number of wastewater streams which are treated in an on-site WWTP. The residuals from this treatment process are dewatered and dried. LRRM is retained to market this high quality residual to farmers as a fertilizer.
Project Responsibilities: LRRM has responsibility to market, transport and manage this stream under contract with the generating facility. Costs for marketing and potential profits are shared by both parties under contract.
